Big Moose Lake, New York (Postcard History)
Published in Paperback by Arcadia Tempus Publishing Group, Inc. (20 June, 2000)
Average review score:

What a Great Tour Both Around the Lake and in TimeThis book is extremely enjoyable and informative. Not only did I love seeing the history of Big Moose Lake through the wonderful collection of vintage picture post cards, but I couldn't resist comparing each picture to the corresponding snapshots I've taken over the years! It is truly amazing how little has changed geographically in this incredibly scenic area of New York State. Scheffler and Carey, however, also do a great job showing the reader how social factors -- like fashion and entertainment -- have changed in the Adirondacks in the past 100 years. A wonderful tour of photographs that transport the reader around the lake and through time.
A trip back in timeThis book will be near and dear to anyone who has visited Big Moose Lake or the Adirondacks.
For the ones who have visited the region before, the book provides a trip back in time and describes how the popular vacation spot got it's start. The best thing about the book and the lake is that not many things have changed since the early 1900's. When reading or just looking at the pictures, travelers are able to take a quick trip around the lake they love whenever they please.

Lake of the Big Snake: An African Rain Forest Adventure
Published in School & Library Binding by Boyds Mills Pr (October, 1998)
Average review score:

Watch out for that snake!"Lake of the Big Snake: An African Rain Forest Adventure" combines a story by Isaac Olaleye with illustrations by Claudia Shepard. The easy-to-read text opens, "In an African rain forest called Inisa, lived two boys, Ade and Tayo. Best friends they were." The friends have an adventure which, as the title hints, involves a startling encounter with a huge water snake.
This book features some really beautiful illustrations: the colorful African clothing, bright green foliage of the rain forest, purple berries, etc. Ultimately, it presents commendable messages about loyalty, courage, and the danger of irresponsibility.

Killers in Africa: The Truth About Animals Lying in Wait and Hunters Lying in Print (Resnick's Library of African Adventure)
Published in Paperback by Alexander Books (April, 1996)
Average review score:

A fine little bookThis is a fine little book on African hunting. It is a bit outdated. As such some of the names of places and animals which have changed in the past 40 years will leave some readers wondering. All in all though it is fine reading. Covers many species, such as the smaller antelopes, which are commonly overlooked in safari books. This book is suitable for younger readers interested in African hunting, or hunting in general. It's small size and easy reading style make it particularly apealing to the teen and pre-teen reader, but do not take this to mean it is a kid's book. It's not!

Killers in Africa : The Truth About Animals Lying in Wait anI've read a number of African hunting and adventure classics including titles by F.C. Selous, Carl Akley and others. Alexander Lake was a comparative late-comer to Africa (early 20th century) but his respect and love for the people and wildlife he writes about are evident. His writing style is authentic, without varnish or too much introspection. The sense you get from this book is that Lake was a man of action who started out as a pragmatist wanting to make some money out of his adventure, but ended up being fundamentally and unexpectedly changed by Africa. The book is filled with fascinating anecdotes of a wild African world which no longer exists. Those of you who enjoyed Isak Dinesen's Out of Africa will find this book equally authentic and personal but less sophisticated in tone. This is a great read that will leave you with a vivd sense of place and time, and a feeling for what Alexander Lake and the Africa of his day were like. If you are an African hunting/adventure buff, you will enjoy this read a great deal.

Nina's North Shore Guide: Big Lake, Big Woods, Big Fun
Published in Paperback by Univ of Minnesota Pr (Trd) (May, 1999)
Average review score:

Funnny, well written, and very complete.Funny, well written, and very complete
A witty and comprehensive guide to Minnesota's North ShoreNina's book goes far beyond the "where to eat, where to shop, where to stay" standard of so many guides. It talks about the shipwrecks of Lake Superior, the geological landscape, rivers and waterfalls, outdoor activities (including curling and watching the stars) and where to locate the nearest liquor store! It is obvious that she loves her neighborhood, and this book helps you to explore more than the surface. A must read for anyone headed up Highway 61 - and a great gift for those who live there.

Bill Nye the Science Guy's Big Blue Ocean
Published in Paperback by Hyperion Press (May, 2003)
Average review score:

not entirely accurateI have a Ph.D. in oceanography and have taught it in colleges. I was looking at this book for clues on writing oceanography for kids. I didn't read every word but in my skimming I found two pretty bad errors. The book says gives theocean off Chile as an example of a region with very little life (WRONG! there's upwelling of nutrient-rich water there and it's an example of a region with a lot of life) and that chemosynthetic bacteria at hydrothermal vents make oxygen (NO! it's energy). The book is fun but for readers who don't know a lot of oceanography, beware.
Ocean science is fun!Bill Nye The Science Guy has a winner, again. This one is the Big Blue Ocean. There are twelve easy to do experiments for children to do. How big is the ocean? That is the first question. It is answered very informatively, then it is followed by a great experiment to cement the concept for hands on learners. The whole book is formatted the same way with informational side bars added. Good third and fourth grade material.
Check It Out!If your kids (and you!) love Bill Nye on TV, they'll also enjoy him in print form. Here Bill is up to his usual antics--but it's all serious science. This fun and accurate introduction to a number of aquatic concepts is likely to "hook" kids--so be prepared to follow this book up with one that goes into more depth!

Raymond Chandler 4 Complete Philip Marlowe Novels the Big Sleep/Farewell, My Lovely/the High Window/the Lady in the Lake
Published in Hardcover by Outlet (August, 1991)
Average review score:

all 4 of these stories are excellentI have always been a fan of all hard-boiled detective novels, but these 4 by Raymond Chandler are some of the best I have ever read. Phillip Marlowe never does the same thing twice and is always interesting to read about. My favorite part of these books is the witty dialouge. Chandler's quotes are fantastic and laugh out loud funny. Although the plots sometimes get a bit off topic(for example, in Farewell My Lovely, Marlowe starts out looking for a dame named Velma and that seems to be the main plot, but then she isn't mentioned again for over 20 chapters), they are great books that everyone should read.
